What is Iga Braid?
Beautifully dyed silk threads are interwoven one by one to create braided cords that have a unique texture and character.
The charm of braided cord lies in the beauty and musubi that each braid contains, a technique that has been handed down since ancient times. The origins of braided cord are said to date back to before the Nara period, when it was primarily used as cord for Buddhist altar equipment and armor.
Iga braiding techniques were introduced to the Iga region in the mid-Meiji period, and the area rapidly developed into the largest producer of high-quality hand-braided cords, including Japanese clothing accessories such as obi-jime sash fasteners. In 1976, the area was designated a "Traditional Craft" by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Furthermore, research and production of machine-woven textiles utilizing traditional techniques has progressed, and the Iga region continues to develop as a specialty production area for braided cords. There are also active efforts to develop new products other than kimono.
